Is it possible to create a custom Cookie to keep a user logged into a SSL Multisite

After doing a few days of research I am coming to the conclusion that a (HTTPS) site can not use autologin to keep a user logged in across the whole network of the multisite.

Question: Is is possible to create a custom COOKIE that when a user logs in sets that custom cookie to keep that user logged into all sites on the multisite network. I have all of the domain names and admin/root access to the server so if there is anything I need to add to the cookie for this to work I should be able to get it.
