How to tweak Ubuntu 18.04 desktop to increase application display area?

I had Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Unity running, after HDD crash reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04 alpha.

To my surprise graphical applications now have smaller display area available - current application menu is not integrated into launcher top bar.

In Unity there was also possible to autohide left sidebar (with the icons of favorite apps). With Ubuntu 18.04 launcher I cannot figure out how to audohide the sidebar.

Is it possible to tweak default launcher / desktop to autohide sidebar and to move application menu bar into launcher top bar?

Maybe it's a kind of mistake that Unity is not supported anymore. Is there any chance to install Unity in Ubuntu 18.04?
