VNC screen keeps going black

I run vnc4server on lubuntu 14.04. The screen constantly blacks out after 10 minutes or so, although the connection is still there and I can continue typing. If I restart my vnc client I can see everything I typed after the screen went dark.

What could be causing this? And is there a way to re-establish the video connection in vnc without having to restart my vnc client?

Specifics: my x-window-manager is openbox. light-locker is running but blank screen is set to never and light locker is supposedly not enabled, according to preferences

contents of my .vnc/xstartup:

xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -nowin &
x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
x-window-manager &
