Using phone camera modules to build custom cameras

I'm working on a project and I'm trying to keep the cost down a bit by building the camera. So I'm wondering if it is possible to use a phone camera module such as this one: https://www.witrigs.com/oem-rear-camera-replacement-for-sony-xperia-xz2 enter image description here

I don't know the exact pin layout of this specific one but I believe it, like basically every other one, is the MIPI standard. Even if it comes to it wouldn't I be able to reverse engineer the signals that are coming from the phone if I were to hook up an oscilloscope to the camera while the camera app is on? And if so could I be able to replicate the signals to operate the camera from an FPGA or some other micro-controller?

Has anyone tried to DIY a camera in this way? There was a similar question asked on this forum but it was involving an iPhone camera and apparently those ones are paired with the phone or something making it not possible from what I read, but would it work with an OEM camera from Sony?
