Build a Joomla componenent with React frot end

I've been learning React over the past few weeks and would like to take a project I did a few years ago and make it into a Joomla component with React as the front end UI.

I've looked around and haven't really found much information in regards to using React in Joomla so I would like to pose the question of:

Should I build the Joomla component that is pretty much just an API (I have never built an API before) and then grab my data from a React app or build in React to my php views inside a component? I don't know whether one has limitations over the other etc so looking for some general feedback on the topic.
